Meet Sherman “Trey” White, our September Professional of the Month. Every month we will highlight one black professional in the Greater New Orleans area.
Name: Sherman “Trey” White
Current Occupation(s): Clearchannel, Q93 radio personality
Twitter Handle: @TreyWhite3
Hometown: Southside Chicago
Where’d you go to school?
I attended King College Prep in Chicago and then I came down to New Orleans to attend Xavier University.
What are some hobbies?
I play tennis and video games (Call of Duty). I’m an electronic junkie.
Describe yourself in 3 words.
Passionate. Fearless. Loyal
List 3 things the average person would not know about you
I play tennis. I don’t eat pork. I don’t enjoy going out to the club.
So for those who haven’t figured it out yet, what do you do?
I am a Q93 radio personality. You can hear me on Sunday’s from 2-8PM
When did your love for music/radio begin?
Since the age of 4, I remember my grandma would play Nina Simone and my grandpa would play James Brown “The Payback.” There was this show that showed music videos called, The Box.
Did you always see yourself where you are now?
I always saw myself in entertainment, but not radio.
You’re so young and doing well at Clearchannel. How long did you work there before you became an on air personality? Was it a long time coming?
It was easy getting in the building. But it took 2 years of interning to get to where I am now. Clearchannel was on a hiring freeze. I felt like I was doing so much for free.
I noticed you helping a young lady at Clearchannel with her air checks. Do you feel like you need to give back?
Yes. I mentor Sheba who works in the front office. She wants to eventually become an on air personality. I feel like since I was an intern, I should give back.
What’s your take on the life of a NOLA professional? As a Black professional in NOLA?
It’s great. I’ve noticed a lot of young hustlers. We’re the future. We’re going in the right direction.
What’s lacking in the city for black professionals?
There’s not enough support. Not just in the professional community, but in the our community. Stop hating. Let them be!
So is NOLA, the end for you?
No. I’m looking to get into radio in NYC. I sent in my audition video for 106 and Search. I look at Terrance J and Donnie Simpson . I eventually want to transition into television.
Give us your parting words, a phrase you live by, a saying you once heard, your words of wisdom!
[quote_right] My grandmother always stressed and would make me recite this quote, “If you do not hope, you will not find what is beyond your hopes.” [/quote_right]
