Let’s just face the facts, it’s 2016 and your resume still plays a very vital role in you landing your next dream career. Although it does play an important part, your resume is not a self-branding tool that is designed to actually get you a job. Your resume is a tool that is designed to get you in front of a hiring manager, so you can then sell yourself during the interviewing process. The key when developing your resume is NOT to be everything to everyone but to truly reflect what makes you unique, amazing, and worth taking a chance on. You want a recruiter or hiring manager to look at your resume and say, “I really want to meet this person. They have so many attributes and experiences that could be a fantastic match for the position.” If this is how you want recruiters and hiring managers to respond to your resume, then it needs to be on point!

Here are 3 tips on how to make your resume dope and really stand out to recruiters and hiring managers.

1.Be an Achiever, not a Doer

Hiring managers want to know that you can produce results. This means that your resume should not look exactly like your current job description. You should show that you have achieved results by following what we like to call the APR formula (Action + Project/Problem + Result) which means your resume should include words like raising, increasing, expanding.

2. Class experience is experience

If you want to get into a specific field and you feel as though you have not had any real world experience that is applicable to the job that you desire; it is more than okay to list a couple of classes you have taken in undergrad or grad school that are relevant to the job you are applying to. Title a section of your resume “Relevant Course Work” and develop a couple of bullet points about what knowledge you gained or major projects you worked on. This will show the hiring manager that you at least have exposure and insight into the field.

3. LinkedIn is your friend

Don’t be afraid to include your LinkedIn URL in your contact information section of your resume. Doing this will allow recruiters and hiring managers to easily access additional professional information about you. This means that your LinkedIn profile should be FIRE. Consisting of a professional picture of you (not your favorite selfie), an AWESOME summary, and connections in your field of interest. You basically should really just take the time to fully develop your LinkedIn profile and showcase who you are and what you bring to the table.
